We tend to wonder every time we see the mixture of nature, scientific, and mythological phenomena existing in the same place."Bhimkund" is one of them, located in Bundelkhand region, near Bajna village in Chattarpur district in Madhya
Pradesh. Approximately 77 km. away from the Chattarpur district by road.
BhimKund, a natural water source in India from ancient times. Until now, we are very well aware of ancient practices of conserving water in low rain areas, usually called talab or kund. In India 'Kund' means a tank or
small reservoir which is used as a rainwater collector for drinking and other household work. Bheem Kund is also one of them but opposite to
that Bheem Kund is not a small tank or reservoir. The depths of the kund are limitless/endless and
to date, no one is able to find the actual depth of BheemKund.
The depth and its origin are still a mystery to many archaeologists and excavators. They did their best to measure the limits of the
Kund but none of them succeeded. A few years ago a team of Discovery Channel tried to solve the mystery but failed, and could not find anything.
The kund lies in an underground cave. The cave is about 30 m
from its mouth. At the entrance gate, there is a small Shivalinga. But what’s
truly astounding and fascinating here is that the roof of the cave, that has a very small opening just
above the Kund as this is the spot where Bhim is said to have hit with his Gada (a kind of weapon) when her wife was thirsty during the exile period.
The
pool is a lovely indigo blue which contrasts well with the red stone walls. The water of BheemKund is crystal clear and clean and you
can actually clearly see fish playing in the water. The creatures living
under the water are literally visible to certain depths.

Bhimkund is linked with the Great Hindu epic Mahabharata.
According to Mahabharata, during the exile period (Vanvas) of Pandavas, they
visited this place and Draupadi (wife of Pandavas) felt thirsty and asked for
water, Pandavas started searching for a water reservoir but unfortunately, they
didn’t find any source, that time Bheem smashed on earth with full strength
from his Gada and water comes out of the place. That’s why this Kund is
known as BheemKund (Bhimkund).

Usually, when a man dies underwater, his body floats above
the surface after his body socked water. However in the BheemKund, the body once drowned,
never floats up and the body actually goes missing and can never be found back.
One more mystery examined by the locals is that the
BheemKund is also an indicator of upcoming natural calamities. The water level
in the BheemKund rises above up to 15 meters of measure, which indicates
there is a natural calamity about to occur.
Before the Tsunami hit the coastal areas in 2004, the
water level rose by 15 feet and the same thing happened at the time of Nepal or
other earthquakes.
The reason behind this could not be found by anyone.
The source connected to this Kund is also undiscovered to date.
There is another belief that the water of this Kund (tank) is so
holy that anyone who baths here, on the day of Makar Sankranti will be free from
all sins. and find Moksha.
